Bobby's Bournemouth

Bobby's is a regeneration project of transforming an old department store into a mixed use building, with localism at the heart of everything we do. Shop, Eat, Drink and Work in one of Bournemouth's most iconic buildings and follow our restoration journey as we bring its original art deco style back to life.

It’s been a whole year since Patch opened its doors here at Bobby’s, and what a year it’s been!

Patch is a space where ideas are shared, creativity flows, and a community of entrepreneurs, freelancers, and local businesses come together to make things happen.From art and live music to networking events and big ideas over coffee, 327 members now call Patch home filling their meeting rooms, private offices, and hot desks.

Rebuilding Bobby’s has always been about community, and Patch has become a huge part of that.

Back in February 2024, we launched Bobby’s Love Story Competition a celebration of the memories, moments, and romances this building has helped nurture over the years.

We invited you to share your love stories connected to Bobby’s, with the winning couple’s names engraved into one of the tiles on the building’s new fascia,beautifully engraved by @blinklettering

One story truly moved us when it arrived in our mailbox. It belonged to Douglas and Thelma Vine 🧡 👇

These photographs were taken at their wedding reception, in July 1952 at the original Bobby’s restaurant on the fourth floor.

Thelma’s uncle Billy, a member of the Bobby’s maintenance team, secured the venue and captured these cherished images.

Douglas, a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, met Thelma at a dance on the last night of his two-week shore leave. Despite spending most of the early part of their relationship apart, with Douglas away at sea, they married less than a year later. Shortly after their wedding,Douglas was posted overseas for what was expected to be two and a half years, later shortened to 18 months.

Meanwhile,Thelma stayed in Bournemouth, working in the departments of various stores, including Bobby’s. Eventually, Douglas was assigned to a shore posting, and the couple were finally reunited for good.

They enjoyed 38 happy years of marriage until Douglas’s sudden passing. Thelma lived on for another 27 years, never forgetting the man she met at that dance or the special role Bobby’s played in their love story 🧡

Bobby’s is more than the “building in the square”, it is a place where stories have begun and legacies have grown. From wedding receptions and family outings to everyday moments, our building has quietly witnessed countless chapters of local life.

We’re proud to honour those chapters as part of our ongoing story 🧡Thank you to Margaret Lewis for sharing her parents very special love story with us.

The tiling along the band of the building is now complete, with only the columns and underside tiling left to finish over the next couple of weeks.

Over on the 60s façade, the Kiwi team are hard at work installing the boarding in preparation for tiling, making sure everything blends seamlessly with the rest of the building.
The new @thebotanistuk sign has also been installed!

2024 has been an incredible year!

We welcomed our amazing new tenants, @patchplaces , to their beautiful new space on the 2nd floor and @studio_wood_uk to their base in our former Bakery building.

The 4th floor is now watertight (a huge milestone!) and ready the for Botanist to begin their fit out in the new year.

One of our biggest achievements this year is completing the most ambitious engineering feat of the Bobby’s project: installing the new lift, thanks to our partners at @spetisburyconstruction and @dorsetlifts

We’re not done yet, and there’s still more to come, but we’re so proud of the progress we’ve made with the help of our construction teams and the amazing support of the Bobby’s community.

The @kiwidesign.co.uk team truly outdid themselves during the 7 month fit-out of the first floor.Their dedication and craftsmanship played a pivotal role in transforming it into the beautiful and welcoming community workspace that it is today.

Many of the Kiwi team members have worked on this 3,800 sq ft floor throughout various phases of the Bobby’s project, often giving up their evenings and weekends to get the job done.

A huge thank you to the team at Kiwi Construction for their tireless effort in creating such a high quality space, all while preserving the original charm and character of Bobby’s.

Trust the process! 🔨 The scaffolding on the right side of the building has been removed, leaving Bobby’s completely scaffold free! 🙌🏻

This clears the way for the upcoming fascia upgrades, set to begin in the next couple of weeks.

Currently in progress is the installation of the remaining Corten steel bracketry on the façade. Signage is set to complete this side of the building, perfectly timed for the launch of our first-floor tenants, @patchplaces

The building was and still is a focal point of the square, once affectionately named “The Store in The Square”, and it’s become even more prevalent in recent times with all of the changes the town centre has seen. By restoring its original name, we wanted to honor the countless individuals who have walked through its doors, worked within its walls, or have cherished memories tied to this historic building.

Our new lift is almost ready to go! After a lengthy process, this invaluable addition is set to transform the main entrance and enhance accessibility for all our visitors and tenants.

Our construction teams are adding the final touches to the lift lobbies on each floor.This lift will work alongside our existing customer lift, eventually servicing all floors of the building 🛗🙌🏻

The tenant mix here at Bobby’s has always been thoroughly considered in our ambition to fully occupy it with businesses with values aligning to our own.

We knew we needed to be more than our heritage as a department store, which is why we haven’t become one! We also know this doesn’t come easy to some, as department stores (especially fabulous ones like Bobby’s) hold such sentiment, but in order to keep this building going we have to look at how people are now using town centres, which is more experience lead. Shopping still comes in to this, but isn’t the extent of what we can offer as the largest building in the Square!😅

We believe local is the future of high streets and we’re committed to leading the way in how we have maintained this throughout our offering. Whether it’s local brands in the Beauty Hall, our new floor of retail soon to be @southcoastmakersmarket, local business Gozney with their HQ on our 3rd floor or @patchplaces becoming a hub for supporting local businesses on our 1st floor this autumn.

By prioritising local businesses, we have the chance of supporting the community, championing the best Bournemouth (& the wider area!) has to offer, and be a part of the town centres revival 💪

The news is out! We are so excited to welcome @southcoastmakersmarket back to Bobby’s this autumn 🙌

We’ve worked closely with Jo, Adam and the team since opening back in 2021, firstly with their South Coast Makers Shop on the ground floor, followed by their legendary markets on our 1st floor to finally their pop-up shop at our sister building @theavenuebournemouth. It has been our long term plan to have them back on a permanent basis as they have become so established at Bobby’s and in the town centre.

Expanding the retail offering at Bobby’s is something we are devoted to, as retail belongs in town centres and so much of the feedback we have received to date has asked for more of it. The South Coast Makers are a shining example of how high-street retail can be sustained, with their values of supporting the very community it serves and being loved by so many for it.

Along with @patchplaces opening on our 1st floor, we’ll have two more floors open permanently this autumn 🤩 It’s all coming together!

Earlier this year, we welcomed local product design company, Studio Wood, to the Bobby’s family as they moved their HQ into our ‘Bakery’ at the rear of the building.

Founder James is from and grew up in Poole, and studied Industrial Design at @bournemouthuni before heading to London where he initially set up Studio Wood.

Their talented product design team have an impressive clientele, including their long-standing partnership with @chillys 💧

We’re thrilled they have joined us in our beautiful Bakery building @kiwidesign.co.uk completely restored back in 2021. We managed to keep the original tiling and brickwork intact, and even the old mill, which looks almost as good as new!

This project in particular took a considerable amount of restoration, as, rather like our sun terrace, it was eventually used as an old stockroom once the Bakery had closed and gradually became dilapidated over the years.

To have this building in use again is nothing short of a milestone for us and we’re excited to see what @studio_wood_uk will design next from their new base at Bobby’s 🙌

From ornate ceilings to our grand staircase, we’ve revived the building’s Art Deco details by staying true to the period but introducing modern touches to infuse new energy into the styling.

Our sea-green doors, featuring window leading and brass handles, open onto a terrazzo-tiled lobby which leads to our dark panelled walls illuminated by Tiffany-style leaded light shades 💡

The ornate iron terrace railing on the 4th floor is replicated for our grand staircase, which have both now been restored as of this year.

We’ve introduced more greenery into the decor with moss and foliage, enhanced with the same bronze from the ‘B’s’ in our balconies, adding a touch of glamour to honour the building’s timeless decadence⚜️
